Local funeral home offers virtual services to help grieving families during coronavirus

PEARLAND, Texas – South Park Funeral Home and Cemetery now allows grieving families to plan and attend interactive memorial gatherings from the safety of their homes as the coronavirus pandemic continues to threaten the community.

“We can identify people who can even sing, they can talk, they can give a eulogy and it comes and goes interactively,” said chief executive Eddie Martinez.

The decision to go online came in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing.

Until recently, only 10 people were allowed to attend the funeral in person.

“The governor has mandated that we can do 25% capacity, so we have 60 people in our chapel. But still, how do you limit those 60 people? Said Martinez.

Martinez said he understands that even virtual services aren’t ideal, but said it’s the only way to keep everyone safe.

“We’re never going to replace the interaction between families, hugs and kisses, hugs. It will always be something the family needs, but in these times we live in now, it is something we do. let’s do to help our families, “he said.

Martinez said interactive funeral services come at no additional cost for those already planning the funeral. It’s just a way to help the community.
