Some Roanoke Valley school districts allow virtual school enrollment for the spring semester

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – With the end of the first semester of the school year quickly approaching, some parents are once again having the opportunity to enroll their children in virtual learning in select school districts.

The Virtual Virginia e-learning platform, which partners with several school districts across the state, is open-enrolled, meaning some students who started the year in Virginia classrooms can complete it online. For Lynchburg City Schools and other districts in the region, there is still time to register.

“You can still enroll students for the spring semester,” says Joshua Boyd, director of LCS Virtual Academy. “Families interested in LCS Virtual Academy could still fill out our interest form, and they would be placed on our waiting list, and we would assess this student. If they are accepted into the program, we will then enroll them in the Virtual Academy program, which would then include a mix of Virtual Virginia courses and Edgenuity courses, or depending on their grade level, it might also include some LCS teachers.

Virtual Virginia bases its program on assessment of state learning standards, and the particular online programs students use for virtual learning depend on the year and school district.

“For students taking classes in Edgenuiry and Virtual Virginia, we check their progress weekly and in some cases daily, depending on the student, just to make sure the students are on the right track,” Boyd explains. He also says that verifying this progress means schools are able to intervene if they find that a student is struggling.

Boyd says student initiative, organization, and motivation can gauge how successful a student will be in a virtual school situation.

“I would say these are important for in-person learners as well,” he continues. “Yes, we have had a few families who have decided to come back in person. But we have noticed that our virtual learners who have these three characteristics have done very well and we as a program try to integrate these three characteristics into our students.

Check with your individual district for possible deadlines to apply for virtual learning for the spring semester.
