The Holy Trinity Catholic Virtual Academy replaces the Our Lady of Lourdes Primary Virtual Academy. The online school was originally associated with Our Lady of Lourdes, a brick and mortar school in Sault Ste. Marie who is part of the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.

With tight deadlines and not knowing how long the virtual schools would run, the decision was made to connect the virtual school to an existing school, ”Education Superintendent Joe Chilelli said in a report to administrators. “It is now clear that virtual schools will operate in the 2021-2022 school year, and potentially beyond. For this reason, it was decided that the virtual school should apply for its own (board school identification number) and become its own school.

The new school name “will allow the school to have its own identity, strengthen the spirit of the school and reduce confusion around the currently shared name,” adds Chilelli.

A committee was created to decide on a new name. The group of 12 members included the administration of the council, parents, administrators, administrators of Our Lady of Lourdes, parents and the Reverend Alex Saurianthadathil, pastor of Saint-Gérard Majella.

Seven names were considered for the school. The committee chose the first choice for students in grades 4 to 8 studying online.

The Holy Trinity represents “the foundation of our Catholic faith,” said Chilelli, with his reference to God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

It also represents how this school has united every region our Catholic council serves – east, north and center, ”said Chilelli.

Including references to the school being a Catholic entity that was “clearly identified” as online were other priorities for the committee, Chilelli said.

Registrations amount to 420 students.

The Catholic Virtual Academy of the Holy Trinity now has its own identity and can begin to establish its own traditions, its own culture and develop the spirit of the school, ”Chilelli said in an email to The Sault Star Thursday. “The school community is very excited about this change. “

The choice of a new name will also put an end to “some confusion” between Notre-Dame de Lourdes and the Elementary Virtual Academy of Notre-Dame de Lourdes, “he said. “Creating and generating reports, taking attendance and accessing student information will also be greatly simplified with a separate (school board identification number). ”

Three students, Xander Agawa, Haileigh Bond and Summer Strong, who are studying online were among the group that met twice to decide on the name of the school.

We were inspired by their leadership, their commitment and the energy they brought to our group, ”said Chilelli.
