York Catholic Council to host virtual school counseling programs for newcomers on August 26-27

The York Catholic District School Board offers two school counseling programs for newcomers to Canada.

In addition to ESL / ELL students, newcomers who have moved to Canada in 2021 or 2020 are “strongly encouraged to enroll in the free Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) or Welcome and Hospitality Week programs.” information for newcomers (WIN), ”the YCDSB said in a statement. .

The NOW program will be hosted by five Catholic high schools in York on August 26-27. Students should register for the NOW program by calling their school’s settlement worker.

The schools are the SCH Our Lady Queen of the World in Richmond Hill, the SCH St. Elizabeth in Thornhill, the SCH St. Robert in Thornhill, the SCH Ste Joan of Arc in Maple and the AC Father Michael McGivney in Markham.


“The NOW program is a two-day virtual workshop for high school students,” the board statement said. “It aims to help students adjust to high school life in Canada through a series of interactive activities and valuable information sessions. Activities may include a virtual school scavenger hunt to learn about key school services, a simulated timetable exercise, discussions of graduation requirements, extracurricular activities and supports available in Catholic high schools in York. It also gives students the opportunity to make new friends with other attendees and former newcomer students who are peer leaders who volunteer to help run this year’s program.


“The WIN program is a one-day virtual workshop for Catholic elementary school students in York and their parents or guardians,” said the YCDSB. “Participants in the WIN program will have the chance to learn about traditional routines in local schools, educational requirements, school protocols and practices, and proven strategies for successfully adapting to school life in Canada. It also allows parents to ask questions about Catholic elementary schools in York.
